Muehlenbeckia axillaris commonly known as creeping pōhuehue or creeping wire vine, is a hardy, mat-forming ground cover native to New Zealand. While related to the upright M. astonii, it is distinguished by its low-growing, prostrate habit.
Forms a dense, springy mat of thin, reddish-brown wiry stems.
Tiny, rounded, glossy dark green leaves, usually less than 1 cm in diameter. In winter, the foliage often turns an attractive bronze.
Typically grows only 10–20 cm tall but can spread 1 metre or more in diameter.
Prolific tiny, creamy-white flowers appear in summer, followed by small, clear-white succulent fruits with a black seed.
Provides essential habitat for native butterflies and food for geckos and birds.
